Why Microsoft Data, 365 & Security?
Why this category matters
Most organisations that use Microsoft 365 for email and collaboration also use Microsoft tools to report on data and protect identities. That makes this one of the most practical areas to certify in: the skills apply directly to systems your employer probably already licenses. This category brings together three related tracks — data and analytics, Microsoft 365 and Power Platform, and security, compliance and identity.
Data and analytics
Power BI remains one of the most requested reporting skills, and PL-300 tests the full workflow from preparing data to modelling, visualising and sharing it. Microsoft Fabric brings data engineering, warehousing and analytics into one platform, and DP-600 and DP-700 cover analytics engineering and data engineering on Fabric. DP-300 suits database administrators running SQL workloads in Azure. DP-900 is a gentle starting point for anyone new to data concepts.
Microsoft 365 and Power Platform
Administrators who manage tenants, licensing, identity and compliance work towards MS-102, which Microsoft has announced will retire on 30 November 2026 — check Microsoft Learn for its successor before you plan. Business users and makers who build apps and automations can start with PL-900 and move on to app-building roles such as AB-410.
Security, compliance and identity
SC-900 introduces Zero Trust, Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Purview concepts. From there, SC-200 is aimed at security operations analysts working with Microsoft Sentinel and Defender, while SC-300 focuses on identity and access administration. These roles are in steady demand as organisations tighten controls around sign-in, devices and data.
How to choose
Pick the track closest to your current job. Analysts should start with PL-300 (or DP-900 if data is new to you). Microsoft 365 administrators should look at the current administrator exam. Security professionals usually take SC-900 for grounding and then SC-200 or SC-300 depending on whether they work in monitoring and response or in identity.
Microsoft has retired several exams in this area during 2026. Our course pages show the current status, but always confirm on Microsoft Learn before booking.
Microsoft Data, 365 & Security FAQs
Is PL-300 suitable for someone who only knows Excel?
Yes, if you are comfortable with Excel tables, formulas and pivot tables. The course builds up Power Query, data modelling and DAX step by step. Some prior exposure to data concepts helps, which is what DP-900 provides.
Should I learn Fabric or stick with Power BI?
Power BI is part of Fabric, so PL-300 skills carry forward. If your organisation is adopting Fabric for data engineering or warehousing, DP-600 or DP-700 is a natural next step after PL-300.
Which security exam should a SOC analyst take?
SC-200 is designed for security operations work with Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender. SC-900 is optional but useful if you are new to Microsoft security products.
MS-900 has retired. Is there a replacement fundamentals course?
MS-900 retired on 31 March 2026. Our catalogue lists a Microsoft 365 and Copilot fundamentals course, but the successor exam code is still being verified — please confirm on Microsoft Learn before booking an exam.
